Best Sunset Spots in Bali: Where I’d Go for Golden Hour

There are few things I love more than that hour in Bali when the heat softens, the sky begins to change colour and everybody suddenly has time to sit still. The best sunset isn’t necessarily the one with the most expensive cocktail or the most famous beach club. Sometimes it’s a simple stretch of sand, a cold drink and nowhere else you need to be.
Seminyak and Double Six Beach: the easy, social sunset
For a relaxed evening without complicated plans, I love the atmosphere along Seminyak and Double Six Beach. You’ll find people walking on the sand, casual beachfront bars and plenty of places to settle in as the sky changes. It’s convenient if you’re staying in Seminyak or Legian, and you can turn sunset into an easy dinner afterwards rather than spending an hour in the car. If you are feeling adventurous the Sunset Beach Horse ride is a memory you won’t soon forget.
Jimbaran Bay: sunset with your feet in the sand
Jimbaran is a lovely choice when you want to make an evening of it. The west-facing beach is known for sunset seafood dinners, and the whole experience feels quite different from the bustle of Seminyak. I’d book a table ahead if you’re visiting during a busy period, and check the exact restaurant location and tide conditions before expecting a particular beachfront setup.
Uluwatu: dramatic cliffs and big ocean views
For something spectacular, the cliffs around Uluwatu are hard to beat. You can plan an evening around Uluwatu Temple and the sunset Kecak performance, or find a suitable cliffside venue with an ocean view. The trade-off is travel time and traffic, so I wouldn’t schedule a rushed sunset dash from another part of Bali. If you’re spending the day in the area, see my Uluwatu day on two different budgets for ideas.

Tanah Lot: Bali’s classic temple silhouette
Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s best-known sunset settings for a reason. The offshore temple and surrounding coastline create a beautiful silhouette as the light changes, although it can be extremely busy at peak times. I would go earlier, explore the area and treat the sunset as the end of the visit rather than racing there at the last minute. Experience Tanah Lot’s magic with the Kecak and Fire Dance at sunset
Six specific sunset spots I recommend

1. La Plancha, Double Six Beach
For a laid-back sunset with your feet in the sand, La Plancha is the spot with colourful beanbags and umbrellas beside Double Six Beach. I’d arrive around 5pm, order something cold and enjoy the atmosphere rather than rushing in at the last moment.
2. Potato Head Beach Club, Seminyak
Potato Head is where I’d spend an entire afternoon before sunset rather than stop by for a quick photograph. It’s an oceanfront venue with restaurants, music and a more polished atmosphere. Check current entry, seating and reservation arrangements before you go. If you are going with kids, I would actually recommend going for the day session rather than the evening session. It’s cheaper and the music and drinking is dialled down enough that the whole family will have a great time. This is my pick for most bang for your buck in terms of higher end beach clubs.
3. Rock Bar at AYANA, Jimbaran
Built on the rocks beneath the cliffs at AYANA, Rock Bar makes watching the sun go down feel like a special occasion. Expect big Indian Ocean views and a more premium experience than a casual beach bar. Book ahead and check seating access and minimum-spend conditions.
4. Single Fin, Uluwatu
Single Fin sits above the surf at Suluban, with expansive clifftop views and a lively atmosphere. It’s a great choice if you want to watch surfers and enjoy drinks as the sky changes colour. Arrive early enough to get a good seat, especially on busy evenings.
5. Uluwatu Temple, Pecatu
For something more distinctly Balinese, Uluwatu Temple combines spectacular cliffs with the possibility of watching a sunset Kecak performance. Allow time to explore before dark and confirm performance tickets in advance. Keep loose belongings secure around the monkeys.
6. Tanah Lot Temple, Tabanan
Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most iconic sunset settings, with the temple silhouetted against the sky and sea. I’d arrive at least an hour early, enjoy the coastal viewpoints and expect crowds. Tides and weather will influence where you can stand for photographs.
My advice before chasing a Bali sunset
Remember that Bali doesn’t have the same sunset view from every coast. Sanur is generally somewhere I’d choose for sunrise, while western beaches and west-facing cliff viewpoints are better suited to sunset. Check the weather, allow extra time for traffic and don’t judge the evening by whether you get a perfectly clear sky. Some of my favourite Bali evenings have been the ones where we simply stopped trying to do too much and enjoyed the company we were with instead of letting a few clouds ruin my experience.
