Best Resorts in Bali: My Favourite Resorts for Every Budget

The best resort in Bali isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. For me, the things that turn a beautiful property into an exceptional stay are the service, the breakfast and the feeling that what you’ve paid is exactly right for what you’re getting. Some holidays call for a five-star resort where you barely leave the grounds. Other times, the smartest booking is an affordable resort that keeps the children entertained while you spend your days exploring Bali.

I tend to plan Bali holidays around a 50/50 philosophy: part of the trip is about discovering the island, and part is about enjoying the accommodation itself. I spend less on the nights when we’re out from morning until evening, then move somewhere wonderful for the last few days and give myself permission to enjoy everything I’m paying for. There is no point booking a magnificent five-star resort and spending every day in traffic on the way to activities elsewhere.

*The stars are affordability, not hotel rating

This is my shortlist of Bali resorts for different budgets, with a particular focus on Legian, Seminyak, Nusa Dua and the Bukit Peninsula. I’m not catering to the backpacker end of the market: affordable here means a comfortable, worthwhile holiday rather than simply the cheapest room available. I’ve also separated resort-style properties from smaller boutique hotels and private villas, which deserve different guides.

What makes a Bali resort worth the money?

When I’m comparing resorts, I think about service before almost anything else. Good service changes how relaxed you feel, particularly when travelling with children. Breakfast matters to me too: a beautiful spread, enough choice and the freedom to start the day slowly are all part of what I’m paying for. Then there’s the setting, the pools, the room layout and whether I can actually see myself spending meaningful time there.

Value isn’t the same thing as cheap. A resort that costs more but gives you days of enjoyment can be excellent value; an expensive resort you’re using only to sleep in can be terrible value. I divide the recommendations below into affordable, mid-range, luxury and ultra-luxury as general tiers, not fixed price bands. Rates depend enormously on school holidays, room categories and what is included.

Best affordable resorts in Bali

Hard Rock Hotel Bali, Kuta — family fun without an ultra-luxury price tag

I have a real soft spot for Hard Rock Hotel Bali because it knows exactly what sort of holiday it’s offering. If you’ve got children to entertain, want a lively atmosphere and like being right in the middle of the action, it can make a lot of sense. The pools and family facilities turn ordinary downtime into entertainment, while the Kuta location gives you access to shopping, restaurants and activities (Waterbom) without organising a long drive for everything.

It isn’t a quiet, secluded luxury escape (unless you upgrade to Rock Royalty). If I want my children to have fun whenever we return to the hotel or I am travelling with a lively group of friends this is precisely the type of resort I’d consider. Its Roxity Kids Club is aimed at four- to twelve-year-olds, and facilities for younger children and teenagers have separate conditions, so check those details and any additional charges before booking.

Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali, South Kuta — a convenient family start or finish

Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali is a researched alternative for families who want genuine resort facilities without necessarily booking at the very top end of the market. Its beachfront South Kuta setting and location close to the airport make it particularly appealing for the first or last few nights of a trip, when the thought of a lengthy transfer with tired children is not especially attractive.

This is a different location from being in the heart of Legian or Seminyak, so I’d weigh that convenience against the restaurants and activities on the rest of your itinerary. It’s a good example of why I don’t judge a resort by the room rate alone: a straightforward arrival, a pool for the children and a less complicated travel day have their own value.

Best mid-range resorts in Bali

Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak Resort — a resort base for exploring

Courtyard by Marriott Bali Seminyak Resort sits in an interesting middle ground. You get a proper pool-focused resort feel while still being able to enjoy Seminyak’s restaurants, cafés and shops. That’s useful when your holiday is a mixture of activities and slower afternoons rather than seven days spent inside a beachfront resort.

For me, this sort of property makes sense when the resort is a comfortable base instead of the main attraction. You can enjoy the facilities without feeling compelled to stay in all day to justify the cost. Just remember that Seminyak’s busy atmosphere is very different from the more self-contained resort environment of Nusa Dua.

Grand Hyatt Bali, Nusa Dua — space, pools and a classic resort atmosphere

Grand Hyatt Bali is another researched option I’d compare for a family holiday when the resort facilities are important. The landscaped grounds, multiple pools and Nusa Dua beach setting are the sort of combination that can make a day at the hotel feel like a complete holiday in itself. When you have children, not needing to organise entertainment every single morning can be a bigger luxury than an especially glamorous room.

The trade-off is location. Nusa Dua is wonderful if you want a calm, resort-led holiday, but it won’t feel like staying in the middle of Seminyak with a new independent restaurant around every corner. I’d book it for pool days and a slower rhythm, not because I intended to cross the island for sightseeing every day.

Best luxury resorts in Bali

Padma Resort Legian — one of my absolute favourites for service

I want to be particularly clear about Padma Resort Legian: I do not consider it a mid-range hotel. In my experience it is a top-tier resort, and the service is possibly the best I’ve experienced anywhere in Bali. That level of care makes an enormous difference to how a holiday feels, and it’s one of the main reasons Padma has such a special place on my list.

The resort also offers something I really value: enough beautiful pools, tropical gardens and family facilities to make staying in a pleasure, without cutting you off from the life outside the property. Its beachfront Legian location means you can enjoy the wider neighbourhood too. This is somewhere I’d happily spend more, but only if I was going to give myself time to enjoy the experience, including the breakfast and the resort itself. I’ve also included Padma in my favourite Bali stays.

Paradisus by Meliá Bali, Nusa Dua — when the resort is the holiday

Paradisus by Meliá Bali is one of the clearest examples of my philosophy of paying for an experience rather than just a bed. I love this style of stay when I want to enjoy beautiful surroundings, good food, pool time and the feeling that very little needs organising. Rather than filling the days with excursions, I’d deliberately leave space to enjoy the resort.

This is what I mean by getting the value you paid for. If I’m spending a significant amount on accommodation, I want it to be somewhere I’d be perfectly happy staying for much of the day. I would compare the room categories and included dining arrangements closely, because the details of what you book can substantially change the experience and the final cost.

Best ultra-luxury resorts in Bali

The Bulgari Resort Bali, Uluwatu — an occasion rather than simply accommodation

For travellers who want an ultra-luxury stay in the Uluwatu area, Bulgari Resort Bali is a researched option that represents a completely different sort of purchase. Here the private villas, cliff setting and high-touch hospitality are part of why you’d travel there in the first place. I’d think of this as a special-occasion experience rather than somewhere to book because it happens to be available.

My advice would be to protect time to enjoy a property at this level. The mistake is booking an exceptional resort and then treating it as nothing more than somewhere to shower and sleep between long day trips. If that’s how you want to spend your holiday, there are much better ways to use your budget.

The Apurva Kempinski Bali, Nusa Dua — where grand architecture meets exceptional luxury

For travellers looking for a truly impressive five-star resort in Bali, The Apurva Kempinski is a researched recommendation that delivers luxury on an extraordinary scale. Set against the cliffs of Nusa Dua overlooking the Indian Ocean, the resort is known for its dramatic architecture, spectacular ocean views and beautifully designed swimming pools. From its grand open-air lobby to its exceptional dining experiences, including the famous underwater Koral Restaurant, this is a property designed to make an impression.

What makes The Apurva Kempinski particularly appealing is that it caters equally well to couples seeking a romantic escape and families wanting a luxurious resort holiday. There are spacious rooms, private pool suites and villas, along with a magnificent beachfront swimming pool. For those wanting an elevated experience, selected suite categories include access to the exclusive Cliff Lounge, with its own infinity pool, refreshments and personalised service.

My advice would be to consider this resort if you genuinely want to spend time enjoying your accommodation rather than exploring Bali from morning until night. Nusa Dua is ideal for a more relaxed, resort-focused holiday, and The Apurva Kempinski is very much a destination in itself.

A favourite outside the south: Amertha Bali Villas, Pemuteran

Amertha Bali Villas is an exception to the big-resort focus, but it’s one of my personal favourites and deserves a mention. Located in Pemuteran in Bali’s northwest, it combines private villa accommodation with shared resort-style features such as beachfront dining and a pool. The slower pace and sense of place are exactly why I love it. It isn’t a substitute for a large family resort with elaborate children’s clubs, and that’s part of the charm. If you want to snorkel from the shore, have kids who love to run and simply want to experience a tourist free version of Bali this is for you. We stayed in the Widuri Garden View which sleeps 10 very comfortably.

Amertha is a reminder that value can come from something completely different: space, privacy, hospitality and being somewhere that feels removed from Bali’s busiest holiday areas. The journey to Pemuteran is significant, so I’d plan it as a proper destination rather than a quick detour from the south. Whenever I head north to visit Pemuteran, I like to make the journey part of the experience. We stop at the beautiful Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on Lake Beratan before continuing into the mountains to visit Banyumala Twin Waterfalls. It’s a wonderful way to turn the drive into a full day of exploring, arriving at the villas in the late afternoon. I cover Amertha Villas in my top three Bali stays.

Pemuteran is best known for its exceptional snorkelling and diving, particularly around nearby Menjangan Island, where crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life make it one of Bali’s most rewarding underwater destinations. The area also offers dolphin-watching excursions and deep-sea fishing, making it an ideal destination for travellers who love spending time on the water.

My biggest Bali resort booking mistakes to avoid

The first mistake is underestimating travel time. A hotel can look perfectly placed on a map, but Bali’s roads can turn what seems like a short outing into a major part of your day. I would always look at the activities I most want to do, group them by area and choose accommodation accordingly. If you’re staying in Nusa Dua but everything on your itinerary is in Ubud or Canggu, that’s worth reconsidering before you pay.

The second mistake is not confirming the details. WhatsApp is your best friend in Bali, and I really encourage travellers to use it. Message the resort to confirm your exact room configuration, children’s ages, extra bed arrangements, breakfast inclusions, transfers and anything else that might affect your stay. I never see that as bothering the hotel; I’d rather know before arriving than discover that I’ve made an expensive assumption.

And of course, there’s the biggest mistake of all: booking an incredible resort and never being there to experience it. Be honest about the trip you’re planning. If you’re exploring every day, choose a more affordable property that does the basics well. If you’re imagining slow breakfasts, long swims and afternoons doing absolutely nothing, budget for a resort that makes those days wonderful.

Should you split your Bali holiday between resorts and villas?

Absolutely, and this is often my favourite approach. I might spend one part of the trip somewhere more affordable or in a private villa where we’re mostly out exploring, then finish with a few nights at a resort where the accommodation itself becomes the experience. That way, you don’t have to choose between seeing Bali and enjoying a beautiful hotel. You get both.

Which Bali resort would I choose?

If service were my deciding factor, Padma Resort Legian would be very difficult to beat. For a resort-led stay where I really wanted to switch off, Paradisus by Meliá Bali would be one of my favourites. When travelling with children and planning lots of activities outside the property, I’d happily look at Hard Rock Hotel Bali because it gives the children plenty to enjoy without pretending that every holiday needs to be ultra-luxurious.

The right Bali resort isn’t the one that costs the most. It’s the one that suits how you intend to spend your time, treats you well and makes you feel that every dollar has been worthwhile. That’s how I think about choosing where to stay, and it’s why my favourites span more than one budget.
