Seminyak: Best for Dining, Shopping and Nightlife
If a private pool is part of your Bali wish list, have a look at my favourite private pool villas in Seminyak before choosing where to stay.
Seminyak is one of Bali’s most established holiday destinations, known for its excellent restaurants, boutique shopping and stylish beach clubs. It’s ideal for travellers who enjoy a lively atmosphere with plenty of dining and entertainment options close to their accommodation.
Best for: Couples, first-time visitors, restaurants and nightlife.

Canggu: Best for Cafés, Surfing and Socialising
Canggu is known for its trendy cafés, fitness studios, surf beaches and vibrant social scene. It’s a favourite among digital nomads and younger travellers, although busy roads and heavy traffic mean choosing your accommodation location carefully is essential.

Ubud: Best for Nature, Culture and Wellness
Surrounded by rice terraces, tropical valleys and traditional villages, Ubud is Bali’s cultural and wellness heart. Its accommodation ranges from affordable guesthouses to luxurious jungle retreats, making it ideal for travellers looking to experience Bali beyond the beaches.

Uluwatu: Best for Beautiful Beaches and Luxury Escapes
Uluwatu works for very different budgets. I compared two ways to spend a day in Uluwatu, and for a memorable evening you can explore a guided Uluwatu Temple visit with an optional Kecak dance. Check whether transfers and performance tickets are included in the option you select.
Uluwatu is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise beaches, world-class surf and spectacular sunsets. Accommodation ranges from affordable guesthouses to exclusive clifftop resorts, although its attractions are spread out and transport is usually necessary.
Best for: Couples, surfers, luxury escapes and beautiful beaches.
Favourite hotel in Uluwatu: The Room Padang-Padang

Nusa Dua: Best for Luxury Resorts and Families
Nusa Dua is one of Bali’s premier resort destinations, offering beautiful beachfront hotels, extensive swimming pools and excellent family facilities. Its manicured resort areas and relatively calm swimming beaches make it particularly appealing to families and travellers seeking a relaxing holiday.
Best for: Families, luxury resorts, honeymoons and beach relaxation.
Favourite hotel in Nusa Dua: Paradisus by Meliá Bali

Sanur: Best for Families and Relaxed Beach Holidays
Sanur offers a slower pace, a beachfront promenade and a wonderful selection of restaurants and cafés. Its relatively sheltered coastline and walkable beachfront make it especially popular with families, older travellers and visitors seeking a more relaxed Bali experience.
Best for: Families, walkability, longer stays and relaxed holidays.
Favourite hotel in Sanur: Maya Sanur Resort & Spa

Jimbaran: Best for Beachfront Resorts and Sunset Dining
Jimbaran is known for its beautiful bay, luxury beachfront resorts and famous sunset seafood restaurants. With its relaxed atmosphere and convenient location near the airport, it’s an excellent choice for couples and families wanting a peaceful coastal escape.

Sidemen: Best for Rice Terraces and Peaceful Escapes
Sidemen deserves more than a quick stop. My complete guide to Sidemen covers the atmosphere, places to explore and activities, while our Sidemen trip cost breakdown shows what we actually spent.
Sidemen offers a glimpse of a quieter Bali, with sweeping rice terraces, traditional villages and beautiful mountain scenery. Its boutique hotels and peaceful countryside make it perfect for slowing down and experiencing the island’s natural beauty.
Best for: Nature lovers, couples, slow travel and peaceful retreats.
Favourite hotel in Sidemen: The River Island

Amed: Best for Snorkelling, Diving and Slow Travel
Amed is a laid-back coastal region in eastern Bali, known for its volcanic beaches, coral reefs and spectacular views of Mount Agung. It’s a wonderful alternative to southern Bali for travellers who enjoy underwater adventures and a slower pace of life.
Best for: Snorkelling, diving, couples and relaxed coastal escapes.

Pemuteran: Best for Secluded Beaches and Nature
Located in northwest Bali, Pemuteran is one of the island’s quieter coastal destinations. Known for its marine life, access to Menjangan Island and peaceful beachfront accommodation, it’s ideal for escaping the crowds and reconnecting with nature.

Should You Stay in One Area or Split Your Bali Holiday?
If you’re moving between Uluwatu, Ubud and East Bali, think about the travel time before filling every day with activities. A private driver can make a multi-stop day easier; browse Bali guided trips and transport options on GetYourGuide, and confirm the exact pickup area and route before booking.
One of the best ways to experience Bali is to combine two contrasting destinations. A beach resort paired with a jungle retreat or quiet countryside escape allows you to discover different sides of the island without spending your entire holiday travelling.
For shorter stays of five to seven nights, one or two locations are usually sufficient. With ten to fourteen nights, consider combining destinations such as Ubud and Uluwatu, Sanur and Nusa Dua, or Seminyak and Sidemen. I personally go by the rule of one destination per 3 nights, if you choose to do less the holiday can feel like you spend more time packing and travelling than enjoying the island.
Our [7-Day Bali Itinerary] and [10-Day Bali Itinerary] can help you decide how to divide your time, while our [Bali Holiday Budget Calculator] makes it easier to plan your accommodation spending.
Where Is the Best Place to Stay in Bali?
The best place to stay in Bali ultimately depends on the experiences you want from your holiday. Some travellers love being surrounded by restaurants and beach clubs, while others dream of quiet mornings overlooking rice terraces or days spent relaxing beside a resort pool.
Our advice is to choose your location before choosing your hotel, and don’t be afraid to experience more than one side of Bali. Explore our individual destination guides to find the accommodation, activities and experiences that suit your perfect Bali holiday.
My all time favourite hotels in Bali

Padma Resort Legian
It’s one of my favourite choices for families who want a proper resort holiday while still being able to walk out and explore the local area.

Paradisus by Meliá Bali, Nusa Dua
Think tropical gardens, beachfront living and the kind of resort where you can genuinely arrive, unpack and barely need to leave.

Amertha Bali Villas, Pemuteran
Set in Bali’s stunning northwest, it offers private villas, tropical gardens and a beachfront setting that feels worlds away from Canguu.
